The battle of Shiloh was one of the bloodiest battles of the civil war. This battle went on for 2 days. The dates were April 6-7 1862. The Union had the army of Tennessee and the army of Ohio. The union had a total of 66,812 soldiers lead by General Ulysses S. Grant. The Confederates had the Army of Mississippi and had a total of 44,699 soldiers lead by Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston .The Union and Confederates had a total of 23,746 casualties. The Union had more casualties because of their larger army and their assault on the heavily defended Confederate lines on day one, they had 13,047 casualties. 1,754 of those casualties were deaths and 8,408 were wounded and finally, 2,885 were captured. When the soldiers were captured that army would have to trade to get them back to the other side in exchange for troops of their own that had been captured. The confederates had 10,699 casualties. 1,728 were deaths, 8,012 were wounded, and 959 were captured.
